Q.Frost Dates & Planting Timing

How do I protect plants from a late spring frost?

A.

Cover plants the evening before frost with sheets, blankets, or row cover. Water the soil thoroughly — wet soil holds heat better and releases it overnight. Move container plants under cover. For larger areas, run sprinklers during the frost (water releases heat as it freezes, protecting plants below).

Watch the conservative end of your county's frost-date table for the latest dates frost has historically occurred. Frost-date pages give the actual probability.
