Q.Pigs & Poultry

Is a Berkshire pig worth the premium price?

A.

For direct-market pork or homestead use, yes — Berkshires produce noticeably higher-quality meat (more marbling, deeper color, better flavor) than commercial breeds. The premium price for Berkshire pork at retail can be $2-5/lb above commercial. Trade-off: slower growth (needs ~7-8 months to butcher weight vs. 5-6 for commercial).

Livestock-breeds pages cover Berkshire and other heritage breeds.
