What is test weight and why does it matter for corn?

Test weight is the weight of corn per bushel volume, measured in lbs/bu. Standard is 56 lbs/bu. Higher test weight indicates better grain quality, denser kernels, and better feed value. Low test weight (below 54) often signals poor pollination, disease pressure, or premature drydown. Elevators typically dock prices for test weight below 54 lbs/bu.
