How often should I test my soil?

Test annually if you're actively amending soil or new to a property. Test every 2-3 years for established gardens and pastures in maintenance mode. Test after any major event (heavy lime, manure spreading, soil disturbance) to track changes. Spring testing — before planting — gives time to apply amendments.
State extension labs run $10-20 per sample and include amendment recommendations.
